What is Affreightment, Contract of?

A contract of affreightment is the agreement between a cargo owner and a vessel owner under which the vessel agrees to carry the cargo for an agreed freight rate. It can take the form of a charter party (for the whole vessel) or a bill of lading (for individual shipments aboard a common carrier).
