What is a Bill of Lading (BOL)?

A Bill of Lading is the foundational ocean shipping document. It serves three roles at once: a receipt that the carrier has the goods, a contract of carriage between shipper and carrier, and — for an original BOL — a document of title that controls who can claim the cargo at destination.
